Welcome to Heartbeat NI

Heartbeat is a Parent Support Group for families of children who have heart disease. Heart disease is now the most common problem at birth in Northern Ireland. In excess of 200 babies are born here each year with a heart disorder. One third of these children are sufficiently ill to require investigation and/or surgery.

To the person in the street heart disease is a hole in the heart. Indeed this is only one of  number of defects which can occur. All the children living in Northern Ireland are treated at Clark Clinic in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. This clinic is only a small unit, staffed by a team of dedicated doctors and nurses, under the leadership of Dr. B. Craig, Dr. F. Casey and Dr. A. Sands

Heartbeat is made up of several locally-based groups, represented at committee level by their group organisers, and all office-bearers of the committee are elected from these group organisers.

The local groups work in many ways, but the primary aim of the Association is to provide emotional and practical support to any family or individual who has a child with heart disease. Support is carried on as and however the child's family has need of it, and many of these families then become active members themselves, with a desire to help others as they know how important it can be to have someone to lean on.

Because of the generosity of its members and friends, Heartbeat has been able to fundraise to provide equipment, parent accommodation and caravans for the use of families. Heartbeat has a very close affinity with Clark Clinic and recently we have provided a new security system for the ward, plus other equipment totalling over £50,000. With the financial situation in the Royal Hospitals Trust at such a level, Clark Clinic relies heavily on Heartbeat to provide much needed equipment crucial for the care of our children, and Heartbeat will continue to do what it can in this respect.
